PERISCOPE

PERISCOPE: http://wearetheperiscope.com/

"PERISCOPE" is the digital magazine on the web and iPad app*. Editors work out of New York. You can read various articles about art, music, politics and business. Some of the articles  stimulate my imagination and thought.

I knew Grace Villamil, an photographer/artist in this magazine. Her photographs show people and landscape in America. Not decorative, but very impressive. Their thoughts at first seem simple, but complicated like a marble pattern by taking a look at the photographs and texts. Texts are written by Yumiko Sakuma, a chief editor of PERISCOPE.

I recommend it to you. Please access this site.

David Guetta - Turn Me On

David Guetta - Turn Me On [feat. Nicki Minaj]

Very cool EDM (Electric Dance Music). In Billboard Music Awards 2013, David Guetta was chosen as the top EDM artist. Great are his sound and arrangement in the track "Turn Me On." Strong and exciting beats will make you excited. After watching this video, I downloaded 2 types of this track. One is "Extended Mix," the other is "David Guetta and Laidback Luke Remix." Awesome!

Paramore - That's What You Get

Paramore - That's What You Get

Social media brings me into contact with the new music. The band, Paramore, makes a major impact on me. This song "That's What You Get" is the most impressive for me. Well-modulated sound and beautiful voice are their attraction. I want to groove to the song with my friends!

quasimode - The Man from Nagpur

Quasimode is Japanese jazz quartet. They plays a piano, percussion, contrabass and drums. Support musicians often participate by sax, flute, trumpet, trombone, or chorus. "Enjoy dancing with jazz" is the keyword of the band, so we can dance and get excited by quasimode music.

quasimode - The Man from Nagpur

Recommend the track named as "The Man from Nagpur." Very groovy, very impressive. When listening to it, you will feel their attraction and be tempted to dance, dance, dance!

By the way, Nagpur is the city in India. Members were inspired by the episode of a certain Japanese in Nagpur, and then composed "The Man from Nagpur."

Emi Meyer - Galaxy's Skirt

Emi Meyer is a singer-songwriter in New York and Tokyo. Her voice is very tranquil and impressive. Sometimes I heard her song in TV commercial, so I got interested in her music.

Emi Meyer - Galaxy's Skirt

Recently Emi put out her new album "Galaxy's Skirt." On YouTube, You can watch the music video of the leading track--the same name as the album. Her vocalism is very unique and her song is like "gravity," I think. When hearing her song, person may be indicated and starts to walk in that direction.

Playwright Creates the New Impression

"Playwright" is a music label in Japan. Some young groups belong to the label. My favorites are Immigrant's Bossa Band, fox capture plan and Tres-men. Their music centers on jazz and includes other style such as Brazilian music, electro, or fusion. When listening to them, you will be excited and want to dance. The label will bring the new sound, excitement and impression to many jazz music lovers, I think.

Rie fu

"Rie fu" acts as a singer-songwriter mainly in Japan. Sings in both Japanese and English, playing the guitar or piano. Her voice is so beautiful. When singing in English, it sounds like Karen Carpenter. The songs she writes are pop, rock, or sometimes folkie, and the lyrics are impressive for me.

BIGGER PICTURE
(in English)

Last year she became independent from Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc. Managing her company, often in a panic, she said, she creates many songs and puts them out at her own pace. Her newest work, titled "BIGGER PICTURE," is the album she released for the first time since flying the nest. You can listen to it and some tracks released in past times on iTunes Store.

LUCKY DAY
(in Japanese)

She organized a concert on January 30th at Shibuya WWW. Played mainly tracks in "BIGGER PICTURE" by herself or with a band. There was a large gap between tranquil ambience and noisy rock sound. According to what she said in a concert, in part of the newest album, she expressed "poison" she hasn't shown. Her poison is expressed by pricking words or heavy-rock sound. You can touch her poison in the music video of "BIGGER PICTURE." In contrast, she sings the bright side of a girl's life in "LUCKY DAY." If you want to know English lyrics, access iTunes Store and listen to the English version. You will be able to feel good.

Mario Giacomelli: The Black is Waiting for the White

The exhibition "Mario Giacomelli: The Black is Waiting for the White" is held at Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Many photos took me to his monochrome world. When starting to view them, I felt that life may be in death. But, finally, felt death may be in life, being surrounded by his photos.

At first, old people walk, eat, kiss, and sleep, so I imagined presence of life in death near them. When viewing more, my image gradually changed. People smiles, dances, walks, and works. They are living and dying by degrees. The brighter light is, the darker shadow is. Shadow is included in light. Death is in life.

Donald Byrd

Donald Byrd, a famous jazz trumpeter, passed away. The melody he wrote is very impressive, and his trumpet moves me. I knew his name and tracks when listened to the album "mode of blue," produced by quasimode, a jazz band in Japan. The tracks of Blue Note Record are recorded in this album. "Ghana" and "The Loner" are selected from Byrd's tracks. I had a good vibe when listened to them in quasimode's arrangement. After this opportunity, I listened to the originals included in "Slow Drag" and "Byrd In Flight." The albums are very groovy, and we can enjoy beautiful melody with simple arrangement.

I think that Byrd is professional side man, so to speak, "supporting actor." Even if in his works, Byrd does not have a big attitude, I think. When his sound is added to the track, the ensemble becomes lush, like a expressive face. So, many musicians might want his trumpet. I want to listen to much works which he performed both as a leader and side man. His sound keeps resonating in this world!

Frances Cone - Soon

Frances Cone - Soon

Downloaded the song "Soon" by Frances Cone, a musician acts in U.S.A. Her voice and her band's sound are very impressive for me. Sometimes her voice sounds like stony and sometimes resonates emotionally. Guitar is pop and drumbeat is bouncing. Imagined that a woman's various emotions are expressed by the song. I can't understand the lyrics, so imagined by my impression acquired by the voice and sounds.

The article about Twitter's new app "Twitter #music" told me her music. In some countries, many users start to use it last week. By using this app, you can share the music you are listening to and soon play or download the music your friends are listening to.

When it was launched, some tweets about this app by famous musicians, such as Mike Shinoda and deadmau5, made many Twitter users excited. Later, Tech Crunch uploaded the article about the musician gathers many buzz by this app, Frances Cone. I listened to her songs on SoundCloud shortly after read the article. Unfortunately, we can't use this app in Japan. However, I am so glad that it expands opportunities for me to meet unknown music.

Hiromi The Trio Project featuring Anthony Jackson and Simon Phillips - MOVE

"MOVE" is the latest work of Hiromi Uehara's trio. The trio is named as "Hiromi The Trio Project featuring Anthony Jackson and Simon Phillips." They put out the first product in last year, and "MOVE" is the second. I am so glad to listen to their sound again. In 2011, their exciting performance shook me in two concerts, TOKYO JAZZ FESTIVAL 2011 and the closing day of concert tour in Japan.

First track, the same name as the album title, is started by Hiromi's piano. When the sound of Anthony and Simon overlapping, I am moved to the trio's world. Just like a water slide, cool and dynamic sounds surround me, stimulate me. I am surprised by how the sound is thick and deep. How many sounds are overlapping? We know that they use three types of instruments, a piano, a contrabass guitar, and drums. In spite of that, I feel it's more than number of instruments in reality. The thickness and depth more intensively surprised and excited me in concert.

The word of "move" is interesting and inspires me. I move, move someone, move someone's heart. Hiromi moves around the world and many music fans (includes many jazz cats) are moved by her music. I think "MOVE" expresses her life as musician. By the way, in Japan we can see the trio performance on November and December, 2012. Very happy to touch the impressive play of the triangle again. I am in the joy of my heart and will be moved by "MOVE."
